Crystal Museum in Gus-Khrustalny: a journey through the edges of time

Did you know that the first Gusev crystal products were created on firewood – local craftsmen heated the furnaces with century-old Meshchersk pine trees in order to achieve the highest purity of glass? Today, our museum, located in the most beautiful building of the former men's college built in 1914, contains amazing evidence of the 265-year history of the Russian crystal business.

Here you can see a real "crystal diplomacy" – an elegant service presented by Alexander II to the Shah of Persia, and a vase with a secret made for Nicholas I (its facets refract light in a special way only when illuminated by sunlight). A special delight is caused by the collection of the Soviet period – from avant-garde compositions of the 1920s to chandeliers created for Moscow metro stations, in which the theme of a "bright future" is played out.

The most unexpected exhibit is a 19th–century "drunken" decanter with an optical illusion: no matter how much is poured into it, it always seems to be full. You will also learn why local craftsmen called crystal "frozen breath" and how the famous Gusev "diamond" faceted glass was created, which became a symbol of the era.

Don't miss the chance to find "your" side – according to statistics, every visitor involuntarily lingers at the exhibit that resonates with its character in an amazing way!
